Amber Found a Home To Call Her Own
Amber’s relationship with her mom got rocky as a teenager, and her mom eventually threw her out of the house. While couch surfing, she had a baby girl. Amber describes herself as a “go getter, a hard worker, an independent person,” and she worked tirelessly to keep afloat, selling snacks at school and working on the weekends. But the realities of finding an apartment without a credit history and little income were daunting. She felt deeply alone. That’s when she found Direct Cash Transfers as Prevention (also known as Targets Housing Assistance Program). Her caseworker helped her find an apartment that would work for her and her daughter, going through kitchen cabinets with her, scoping out the neighborhood. Amber was so excited to tell her daughter, “We have our own home.” She’s now doing everything she can “to stay stable” and “keep moving forward.”
