Sex workers may have a higher risk of exposure to sexually transmitted infections (STIs) because of the nature of their work, making regular sexual health care especially important. Consistent use of condoms or other barrier methods, routine STI screening, vaccination against HPV and hepatitis B when appropriate, and prompt treatment of any infection can significantly reduce health risks. Many STIs do not cause symptoms, so regular testing is recommended even when a person feels well. Access to confidential, respectful healthcare and accurate information empowers sex workers to protect their own health and the health of their clients while supporting their overall wellbeing. Here are some of the most common sexually transmitted diseases/infections (STDs/STIs):
Chlamydia
Gonorrhea
Syphilis
Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)
Human papillomavirus (HPV)
Genital herpes
Trichomoniasis
Hepatitis B
Hepatitis C (can be sexually transmitted, though this is less common than blood-borne transmission in many settings)
Mycoplasma genitalium
Many STIs can be treated effectively, and bacterial infections such as chlamydia, gonorrhea, and syphilis are often curable with appropriate antibiotics. Viral infections such as HIV, HPV, herpes, and hepatitis B are generally managed rather than cured, although treatments can control the infection and reduce transmission. Regular STI screening, condom use, vaccination (for HPV and hepatitis B), and prompt medical care are important measures for prevention and early treatment.
