People are forgetting that Heeramandi is based of the wealthiest courtesans, these are poor courtesans, during colonial era India, courtesans lost much of their wealth, Bhansali's Heeramandi is based off of the Tawaifs whom were extremely rich, the courtesans of Heeramandi used to exist inrl, the lavish, royalty luxuries was an actual thing of the past, the excessive jewellery was an actual thing, so it's historically accurate.

  25. This is 1952 guys. Heeramandi was set before independence during the existence of courtesans called Tawaifs. Tawaifs no longer existed after independence, most of them left Heeramandi and took up performing arts. Tawaif culture was during british raj and evaporated after independence. Plus tawaifs were high classed courtesans, they were not like regular prostitutes. They lived extremely lavish and affluent lives and catered to only a wealthy clientele of nawabs and englishmen.

  31. guys this is AFTER the ending of heeramandi, when the women were forced to the streets, left to poverty. bhansali potrayed the courtesans of northern india, which existed way before active prostitution in lahore, which came up about near 1950's, almost 50 years after heeramandi. the courtesans of heeramandi were often well read, very talented and connected to tradition. after the british raj slowly started to oppress these women, the courtesans were reduced to prostitutes, who you see in these pictures.

    don't hate on a production just because YOU are less informed. bhansali obviously showed heeramandi as a grand place, probably in a more modernized way than it actually was, but its bollywood and the film industry, the work is a piece of fiction, and not a documentary
